Ways to maintain the best credit

If you plan on being a borrower at some point in your financial life, you are going to need to access credit.  Credit is not something that is inherited, it is built.

As a young person starting out, the best way to build your credit may be to get your first department store credit card.  The next level would be to get a major credit card like Visa or MasterCard.  As you pay your bills on time month after month, you can build a good credit history that will assist you in accessing credit should you need it.

Credit history – the length of time you have held each credit item on your credit report in good standing helps you develop a positive credit history.  Having a longer credit history will serve you better than a shorter one.  If you are young, be prepared for the time it takes to build up a positive credit history.  This is done by paying your bills on time each month.

Available Credit – if you have credit cards, try your best not to keep the balances high on any of them.  Having available credit is much better than being maxed out on your credit cards when it comes to having good credit and a solid credit score.  The best idea is to charge only what you know you can pay off at the end of the month.  This way you are avoiding hefty finance charges while still keeping your card open and with low balances, or none at all.  Handling your available credit this way is another great way to keep your credit in good standing.

Removal of inaccuracies – one of the easiest ways to make sure that your credit score is good is by checking it periodically for inaccuracies.  Believe it or not, creditors often make mistakes in reporting information regarding you to the credit bureaus.  If you find any inaccuracies you can dispute it and make the creditor prove that the item is right.

Multiple inquiries – while it may be good to have a few credit cards that are in good standing, it is not good to apply for too much credit.  Giving too many people access to pull your credit is not a good idea if your want to maintain a high credit score.  If you can, try to choose where you will apply for credit or what loans you will attempt to get.

The above represent a few of the major ways you can maintain good credit and keep your credit rating high. Of course no one is perfect and financial situations can get tough for the best of us.  It is important not to get discouraged but instead do what you can to begin turning your credit around.   No matter where you are, it is never too late to rebuild your credit and work towards having a credit rating that will give you the power to get the best interest rates.
